The Department for Energy and Mining
The Department for Energy and Mining is a world-leading regulator for all mining activity (including quarries and mines), energy resource activities (including oil, gas, renewable energy and hydrogen projects) as well as technical regulator for electricity and gas products and services in South Australia. It is one of very few government departments globally that recognises the link between mining and renewable energy.
Embedded within the department is the Geological Survey of South Australia, who’s responsibility is to unlock the state’s mineral resources by sharing geological data and insights, accelerating discoveries and attracting sustainable investment that contributes to the transformation of our economy.
The Department also delivers on South Australia’s commitment to the transformation economy by developing policy and optimising the economic benefits from the state’s clean energy transition – enabling growth industries, such as hydrogen, green iron and copper, to lead the decarbonisation of the global economy.

The State Prosperity Project
With our unique combination of sun, wind, and minerals necessary for decarbonisation, we can lead the world with renewable hydrogen energy, green steel and copper production - bringing thousands of new jobs and a surging economy. This won’t just happen; we have to make it happen. So, the Malinauskas Labor Government has just launched the State Prosperity Project.
The State Prosperity Project features major projects essential for realising this opportunity and includes the Hydrogen Jobs Plan, which promises to put our state at the global forefront of this transformational renewable energy source.
But that is just the beginning, the State Government is also exploring the Northern Water Project, a large-scale desalination plant and pipeline network, which would unlock Australia’s largest copper deposits and magnetite iron deposits and realise the full potential of hydrogen in South Australia.
The State Prosperity Project goes beyond these investments, it’s also about having a plan to train up the highly-skilled workforce we’ll need. That’s why we are investing in bringing back technical colleges, including one in Findon.
The State Prosperity Project is not just relevant to South Australians in the mid-north. This stands to present opportunities and improve the lives of all South Australians, including in West Torrens. The proposed Northern Water Project alone stands to grow the state’s economy by 4%, which means more intergenerational wealth for South Australians and a higher quality of life.
Just some of the major mines South Australia has to offer…
